EDISON THEATER — A new drama club has started at Amani Public Charter School. The purpose of the drama club is to build the talent pool and get kids excited about the theater program.

Twenty-two kids were interested in the idea, said Ms. Stern, who is the executive director of Amani.

“The shows that we (attended) in the past are ‘Wicked,’ ‘Aladdin,’ ‘Lion King,’ ‘After Midnight’ and ‘Matilda.’” said Ms. Stern. “In this club, we are going to play theater games and learn  the expectations of rehearsals.”

In the past, Amani has produced “You Are a Good Man Charlie Brown, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Bye Bye Birdie.” This year’s production is “Once on This Island.”

In its second three weeks, the drama club will work on improvisational workshops, which means how to be an ensemble and develop characters. Outside guest stars will teach during this period.

“The drama club might see a Broadway show,” Ms. Stern said. “We are starting from scratch to build a drama club. Drama club is a great way to build self esteem.”
